What is radon gas:
  • Radon is a colorless and odorless natural radioactive gas that is produced by the breakdown of uranium in the earth's crust.
  • Radon is the number one cause of lung cancer in non smokers, second only to the number of lung cancer incidents from cigarette smoke.
  • If you are a smoker, you are at much greater risk from Radon induced lung cancer
  • Radon is a Class A carcinogen.
  • Alpha radiation is released as the Radon Gas decays.
  • Radon is not known to cause any other health problems or symptoms.
  • Radon is estimated to cause over 20,000 lung cancer deaths per year.
  • Approximately 50 US lives are needlessly lost each day, (please test for radon)
  • 1 out of every 5 homes in JEFFERSON/Lewis county is estimated to have elevated radon levels
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas formed by the decay of uranium found in soil, rock, and groundwater. Low levels of uranium are present throughout the Earth's crust, meaning radon can be found in all 50 states.
Once radon is produced, it moves upward through the ground and into the air above. Some of it can also dissolve into groundwater and move with it beneath the surface — potentially entering homes through basements, crawlspaces, and well water systems.
Radon is considered a low-level source of radiation, but long-term exposure can be harmful. In fact, radon gas accounts for approximately 55% of the average person’s lifetime radiation exposure — more than any other source, including medical imaging. For comparison, CT scans account for about 11% of total exposure.
Because radon is invisible, odorless, and tasteless, testing is the only way to know if it’s present at elevated levels in your home.

How Radon Enters Your Home
Radon gas typically enters homes through cracks and openings in the slab, basement, or crawl space. Differences in air pressure inside the home — caused by warm air rising and other natural factors — draw radon from the soil into living spaces. Once inside, your furnace and air conditioning systems can circulate the radon throughout the house.

In JEFFERSON COUNTY, NY area, any home — whether new or old, with or without a basement, sealed or unsealed — can potentially have elevated radon levels. The primary source of radon problems is soil gas, although less common sources include well water and some building materials. Because radon is invisible and odorless, the only way to know if your home has elevated radon levels is by measuring the radon concentration in the air through testing.

Most radiation protection specialists believe, (at a minimum), that if you are continuously exposed to levels at or above 4.0 pCi/L then you are at risk. The US EPA's action level for Radon is 4.0 pCi/L.
